Freshman QB Eugene Smith Suffers Injury
An injury could not just come soon enough for freshman quarterback Eugene Smith. Smith, who arrived to Camp Mountaineer about two weeks ago, injured his left foot, not on the field, but in an off-field incident. The accident dealt with a recreational ATV which occurred either Friday or Saturday. Smith’s injury to a bone in his left foot may cause him to miss at least 8 weeks.
The Mountaineers are thin at the quarterback position making this a vital injury to them. Their current roster consists of Jarret Brown as the starter with former West Virginia quarterback Pat White’s brother, Coley White, Eugene Smith and WR-QB Bradley Starks at the No. 2 spot. Since current starting quarterback Jarret Brown is in his last year of eligibility, the Mountaineers will need to get a quality backup to get some game experience before next year comes around. Despite Smith’s injury, he was able to be there 3 weeks before his injury so he was able to get some time with the playbook and wideouts in 7 on 7 and worked with the S&C staff those 3 weeks as well.
Smith is expected to recover at or around September 1 at the latest, which is only four days before the Mountaineer’s first game against Liberty, a game where he would be expected to earn some playing time.
