The West Virginia Mountaineers recorded their first win of the 2009-2010 season against the Liberty Flames, despite a slow offensive start for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers won its sixth stright season opener with the win over the Flames. Tyler Bitancurt opened up the game with one of his four field goals, leading WVU to a 33-20 victory. Noel Devine rushed for 112 yards on 17 attempts with a TD as Jarret Brown ran for 69 yards on 9 carries along with a 22 yard TD run of his own. Brown also threw for 243 yards while going 19/26 with no interceptions or touchdowns in WVU’s first game without Pat White.

Sophmore DB Robert Sands sealed the win for the Mountaineers with an interception midway through the fourth quarter, leading to a 24-yard run by Noel Devine. The Mountaineer offense accounted for 438 yards with no turnovers in 29 minutes and 22 seconds of work. WVU converted 6 of the 12 attempts on 3rd down while reaching 22 first downs on the day. The Mountaineers have plenty of work to do, especially defensively, with East Carloina’s upcoming visit to Morgantown on Saturday, September 15.
