The Mountaineers were able to cruise past Syracuse (2-4, 0-2) 34-13 in their first Big East game and win of the season. West Virginia’s defense caused an early turnover with an interception by redshirt sophmore Josh Taylor leading to a Jarret Brown touchdown pass to Noel Devine on the first play of the drive. Devine also rushed for a touchdown while having a rather quiet day with 91 yards rushing on 22 attempts. Redshirt freshman Ryan Clarke contributed to the Mountaineer’s early lead with 2 rushing touchdowns of his own.
Jarret Brown led the Mountaineers by throwing for 244 yards on 30 attempts completing 22 of them with 179 of them coming in the first half. Freshman Eugene Smith relieved Brown in the fourth quarter having 14 yards through the air completing 3 of 4 attempts.
Unlike recent games, West Virginia managed to only give up 1 turnover which was a fumble from Ryan Clarke early in the third quarter. The Mountaineers finished with 385 total yards while dominating the time of possession, holding the ball for 39:02.
West Virginia will be back in action on Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 pm. Marshall University will be traveling to Morgantown for the annual Friends of Coal Bowl.
