WVU played Cincinnati in the Big East Conference Tournament at Madison Square Garden Thursday night. The 54-51 win for the Mountaineers was achieved by a banked three by Da’Sean Butler as the clock expired. Leading the Mountaineers were: Kevin Jones (17 Pts, 6 Reb), Da’Sean Butler (15 Pts, 5 Assists, 6 Reb), and Devin Ebanks (10 Pts, 5 Assists, 6 Reb).

After beginning the first half up 18-4, the Mountaineers fell into an all-too-common shooting slump. Cincinnati began both halves with severe scoring droughts (0-10 FG to start the first and 0-7 to start the second), but took off near the end, eventually tying the game at 51 with :57 left on the clock. After Dion Dixon lost control of the ball near the Mountaineers’ bench in Cincinnati’s last chance to score, WVU was left with 3.7 seconds to avoid an overtime. The ball was in-bounded to Da’Sean Butler who avoided two defenders and banked in a fade-away 3-point jumper as the buzzer sounded.

The Mountaineers face Notre Dame tonight at 9:00 on ESPN. The last time these two teams played, Notre Dame came out with a 2 point W after a strong West Virginia comeback. Notre Dame has been playing their best basketball of the season in the last few weeks, but WVU has been also. This will be a close game, but the Mountaineers should come out on top.
